Horace Broadnax made a name for himself during his college career by
helping lead Georgetown University to the 1984 NCAA Men’s National
Championship Title and as National Championship runner-ups in 1985.
Horace’s Georgetown team was an incredible 115-25 over his four-year
career, including 30 plus wins seasons in 1984 and 1985. After receiving
his Finance degree from Georgetown in 1986, Horace continued on in his
studies, obtaining his Juris Doctorate from Florida State University in
1991. Today he remains one of the only coaches in the NCAA to have such
a prestigious post-graduate degree as a Juris Doctorate.
Savannah State University Athletics Director Tony O’Neal named Horace
Broadnax the head coach for the Savannah State University men’s
basketball team on April 11, 2005. Horace has revived the Savannah State
University Men’s Basketball Program. A school that finished winless just
one year before Horace took over as Head Coach, the program has gone on
to win 25 games over the last two seasons!
Broadnax came to SSU after practicing law for three years. Prior, he was
the head men’s basketball coach at Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona
Beach, Fla., from 1997 until 2002. The Plant City, Fla., native is
credited with reviving the men’s basketball program at Bethune-Cookman
College.
During his second year as head coach, Broadnax was voted the men’s Coach
of the Year in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) after turning
around a team that finished 1-26 in his first year as coach to a
fifth-place finish with a 10-9 conference record. Broadnax earned the
title again after the men’s team earned its first number one ranking in
the MEAC during the 1999-2000 regular season. Broadnax stepped down in
2002 for family reasons.
Prior to joining Bethune-Cookman College, Broadnax was the head men’s
basketball coach at Valencia Community College in Orlando, Fla., for two
years, where he recorded the school’s first 20-win season in 1996-97. He
also worked as the video coordinator for the men’s basketball team at
the University of Florida and held assistant basketball coaching
positions at Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M University in Tallahassee,
Fla.
He is married to Tammy Broadnax and the couple has two sons, Horace
Kaleb and Randall Trent.
